Police looking into gun attack on Alam 'from multiple angles'
A day after its constitution, the three-member probe committee on Sunday started investigation into the Friday gun attack on CPN-UML leader Mohammud Alam in Bara from multiple angles.
The committee, headed by Additional Inspector General of Nepal Police Dinkar Shumsher Rana, reached the crime scene in Bara and started interrogation and other preliminary investigation today.
The panel comprises of DIG Bigyan Raj Sharma, central regional police head, and DIG Dev Raj Bhatta from the National Investigation Division (NID).
A high-level source at the Nepal Police headquarters, Naxal, said the attack on Alam is being investigated in connection with the recent arrest of Indian terrorist Yasin Bhatkal from the Indo-Nepal border.
A quarter of local media in Bara and Parsa had reported that Alam had provided shelter to the dreaded Indian terrorist. Alam, however, had rubbished the reports, dubbing them baseless.
Bhatkal, the headman of Indian Muzahiddin, a terrorist group responsible for multiple bombing incidents at various parts in India, was reportedly apprehended by the Nepal Police and Indian security agencies jointly from the Nepali side in September.
Besides that, according to police, the attack could also have been orchestrated to threaten the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.
CPN-UML has fielded Alam as the party's first-past-the-post candidate from Bara-4.
Alam was airlifted to Kathmandu from Birgunj, where he was rushed to after the incident, on Friday.
Doctors attending Alam at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Maharajgunj, said he is still in a critical condition. With severe brain injuries, he has been put on the mechanical ventilator to save his life. -THT Online
