Dense fog halts flights‚ passengers stranded
BARA: Dense fog has disrupted flights to and from Simara Airport in Bara for the past two days.
According to airport tower controller Saroj Bhatta, regular flights have been halted due to thick fog blanketing the airfield and neighbouring areas.
Usually, seven flights operate between Kathmandu and Simara. Buddha Air operates six flights between Bara and Kathmandu, and Yeti Airlines has one flight on the same route.
The flights cannot resume until the weather becomes favourable, said tower controller Suraj Bishankha.
“Although the weather today was comparatively better than yesterday, the flights couldn’t operate due to low visibility,” said Bishankha, adding, “The visibility should be at least 1,500 for flights.”
With the flights halted for two days, scores of passengers have found themselves at the receiving end.
The airport mainly serves commoners and businesspersons of Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Makawanpur and Sarlahi. But ever since the weather played foul and grounded the aircraft, people have been facing problems, said sales agent Ramchandra Lama.
Flights were also halted due to adverse weather in Kailali’s Geta Airport since Tuesday.
In Nepalgunj, on the other hand, flights operated at Ranjha Airport despite bad weather.
