KATHMANDU, JAN - As the crucial Central Committee meet draws closer, senior UCPN (Maoist) leaders Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha have said only a ‘self-criticism’ from Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal would stop them from tabling a parallel document challenging him at the meet.

Bhattarai and Shrestha said the “self-criticism” for the election debacle should be a part of the political document Dahal would present at the CC meet. The two have been mulling over bringing a separate document outlining party’s organisational structure and political course. Such a condition from the two party heavyweights comes at a time when there are clear signs of intra-party power struggle.

Dahal is reaching out to his disgruntled deputies as he is currently in the process of preparing a political document, which is expected to explain the reasons behind party’s poor performance in the recent CA polls and chart out an organisation reform plan.

In their recent meeting with the party chairman, Bhattarai and Shrestha had sought “objective analysis” of past performances of the party, demanding ‘self-criticism’ from Dahal.

“Party chairman has assured me of bringing a political document that would address the issue of self-criticism and present an objective analysis of his past mistakes,” said Shrestha.

As the top three leaders claim that they do not have any ideological differences, the CC will be focused mainly on reviewing the past mistakes and internal power-sharing issues.

The CC is scheduled to begin on January 26. Leaders also said Dahal will propose downsizing the current 266-member CC to 99 by removing all except for those elected at the party’s seventh General Convention in February last year.

“We will achieve a breakthrough in terms of reforming the party’s organisation structure but exact size is yet to be decided,” said Shrestha.

Bhattarai is preparing to raise the issue of “democratisation of party” and equal allocation of responsibilities to party leaders. Bhattarai is of the view that party’s representatives should be selected through a direct election.

Meanwhile, leaders say consultations are already under way on decreasing the various layers of party’s organisational structure such as office bearer, standing committee, politburo, CC, state committee and district level.

“These organisations are not necessary . They are creating obstacles to reach out to people,” said a leader close to Dahal.

After joining the peaceful politics, many leaders and cadres of other parties entered the Maoist party, further enlarging its structure. The party has recently concluded party’s messy organisational structure as a reason for its defeat in the November 19 election. -Ekantipur
