Cabinet approves Dassanayake’s tenure for a year
The government has officially extended the contract of National Cricket Team’s head coach Pubudu Dassanayake by a year.
The cabinet meeting on Friday approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which had shown readiness to support the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to renew the tenure on July 1 after CAN failed to do so.
CAN had earlier refused to renew the contract citing financial burden of the coach and stated in their press release that they are yet to receive the budget from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and International Cricket Council (ICC).
Dassanayake’s tenure had expired on June 30 while he was first hired on August 23, 2011 for US$ 5,000 a month.
Following CAN’s disinterest to renew the contract of head coach, National Team captain Paras Khadka had also threatened to quit cricket.
Under the coaching of Dassanayake, Nepal has made it to ICC Twenty20 World Cup held in Bangladesh earlier this year. Nepal also got T20 International status soon after.
Nepal is also going to participate in the T20 Cricket Asian Games scheduled to kick off from September 19 to October 4, 2014 in Incheon, South Korea.
Nepal has been drawn alongside Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Malaysia, Maldives, China, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and host South Korea in the tournament.
Similarly, Nepal will fly to Uganda for ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 to be held from October 26 to November 2, 2014.
