Govt gives Rs 77.82m in compensation
The government has distributed Rs 77.82 million in compensation to 480 bird flu -hit poultry farmers in Bhaktapur as of Tuesday.
On August 15, Bhaktapur district was declared bird-flu emergency zone. Blanket culling was carried out in farms west of the Manohara River, including Mulpani, Gothatar and Pepsicola, in jungle areas near Kavre in the east, areas demarcated by the Nagarkot jungle in the north and Nangkhel Gundu hill in the south of the district.
Officials said only 35 poultry farms were now left to receive the relief amount. A total of 466 small farmers, including poultry entrepreneurs, received the compensation distributed through the District Financial Controller General Office Bhaktapur. An additional 16 farms on Tuesday sought Rs 17.71million in compensation.
Farmers had demanded a revision in compensation amount, saying that the current compensation was very nominal. The Ministry of Agriculture Development then formed a committee under Dinesh Parajuli, director of the Directorate of Livestock Production, to recommend compensation amount. Sources said the committee submitted its report on the second week of October recommending the government to raise the compensation amount. The ministry, however, has not made public the report yet.
Chief of the District Livestock Service Office Bhaktapur Khagendraraj Bhatta said the compensation was distributed in line with the Bird Flu Control Order.
As per the order, the compensation for egg, chick and broiler chicken (up to four-week old) has been fixed at Rs 3, Rs 50 and Rs 130 per unit, respectively.
The amount for parent chicken has been fixed at Rs 250 per unit and poultry feed at Rs 10 per kg.
On July 28, Himal Hatchery in Sipadol, Bhaktapur, was found to be infected with H5N1 virus.

Likewise, around 1.2 million eggs were destroyed in the areas. The government has allocated Rs 132 million to compensate farmers hit by bird flu in Bhaktapur. - Ekantipur
